1 Title: REPRESENTATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS IN THE NIGER DELTA A STUDY OF TANURE OJAIDE’S THE ACTIVIST.pdf
Author: TAMBARI OGBONANWII DICK, PhD.
Abstract: Writers who are also members of the society, write from the very context within which they feel concerned or are directly affected by the prevailing social circumstances. No literary work exists in a vacuum. The essence of any composition is to bring to the fore issues that are of utmost significance to the society and the people concerned. The artistic vision of Tanure Ojaide  in The Activist focuses on the hopelessness and helplessness associated with a sick and corrupt system where everyone is expected to work out his own “salvation” due to the insensitivity of those in government towards the plights of the people they govern. The seeming organized crimes by the deprived and less-privileged are only but a fight to reclaim their lost heritage and wealth. The glaring gross marginalization, injustices and underdevelopment in some parts of Nigeria and particularly in the Niger Delta form the focal point in the artistic innovation as portrayed in The Activist, which shows the need for a more extensive medium to articulate the perceptions of governance in Nigeria and also to demonstrate how and who should govern to right the wrongs in the society. Key words: Deprivation, Governance, Marginalization, Injustice, Underdevelopment View
2 Title: ESTABLISHING A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN THE GIRL CHILD FOR CHILD GROOMING IN RIVERS STATE NIGERIA.pdf
Author: HELLEN SOKARI A-OKUJAGU, PhD.
Abstract: Living together has been a lifelong experience for the sustenance of humanity. Nature however has assigned responsibilities to individuals and gender for which the functions and perseverance of humans are being well nurtured. The girlchild in the society has been identified as a source of pacifying human aggression, grooming character and nurturing existence. Recently however series of challenges have obstructed the functions of the girlchild which to some extent have severed behaviour, withdrawal attitude and exposed individuals in her care to extreme danger. Inspite of the abuse, the girlchild is still acknowledged as a soothing tool for child care in Rivers state. The paper therefore emphasizes the outstanding roles of the girlchild in the society, challenges and implications.  The paper recommends a return to pure African grooming to reinstate the worth of the girlchild for the grooming of children generally in Rivers state. 6 Title: ENVIRONMENT POVERTY AND INFANT MORTALITY IN NIGERIA.pdf
Author: JEBBIN MACLEAN FELIX
Abstract: This paper examined the relationship between poverty, environment and infant mortality in Nigeria using data spanning from 1986 to 2018. The researcher employed  Augmented Dickey -Fuller test (ADF) to check the stationarity of the series and Johansen cointegration to ascertain the presence or absence of long run relationship among the variable such as poverty, carbon dioxide emission, nitrous emission, infant mortality, expenditure on health and  out of pocket expenditure on health. The result established the existence of a long-run relationship among the variables, which informed the choice of the error correction mechanism to ascertain the speed of adjustment. The result of the error correction mechanism shows a moderate speed of adjustment (60%). The Granger causality test indicated that a unidirectional causality flows from environment to infant mortality, while a bidirectional causality exists between poverty and infant mortality. An inverse relationship exists between the environment and infant mortality, likewise also between poverty and infant mortality. The paper, therefore, concluded that a negative relationship exist between environment, poverty and infant mortality in Nigeria. Based this following recommendations were made; antenatal and postnatal care should be subsidised or administered free to reduce the incidence of infant mortality in the country.  Environmental laws should be enacted and religiously implemented in the country as the reduce the rate of environmental degradation. 8 Title: THE POLITICS OF VOTE BUYING THE NIGERIAN EXPERIENCE 2015-2019 GENERAL ELECTION.pdf
Author: ABRAHAM OWUGBOSIA STEWART, PhD.
Abstract: According to David Eastern, politics is a political system or that sub-system of the social system which deals with authoritative allocation of values for the society. It is any persistent pattern of human relations which involves power relation, rule and power. Robson stated that politics centered on the struggle to gain and retain power, to exercise power influence over others or to resist that exercise. Basically as a result of the above, politicians use every means to get power including vote buying to win or influences the result of election in their favour. Vote buying is a global practice in the electoral process with its implications in democratic process and participation of the electorate in the electoral process. Vote buying involves the exchange of eligible vote for monetary reward, gifts, food items and various public relations (PR) services. In the Nigerian situation, vote buying is mostly or prominently executed during election process by political parties or its agents as a means of acquiring high vote and support for election victory. Candidates and their political parties resort to vote buying to achieve their political interest in the election, thereby making vote buying an essential in the political process. In Nigeria between “2015 to 2019”, vote buying was necessitated by several factors and carried out by different actors during elections and thereby has significant implications on the democratic process and sustainable of democratization. This study will identify the causes of vote buying and will make appropriate recommendations and strategies to minimize or curb the effect of vote buying and improve the political interest and participation of the electorate in the electoral process and voting during election. This study employed secondary qualitative data. Keywords: Vote Buying, Democratic participation, the electorate, vote selling, political party’s agents. View
9 Title: MEDIA AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY A STUDY OF TELEVISION COVERAGE OF OGABKIRI COMMUNAL CRISIS.pdf
Author: Friday Nwafor, PhD.,Ovunda PhD. & Windy sylvanus Alikor
Abstract: This study titled Media and Social Responsibility: A Study of Television Coverage of the Ogbakiri Communal Crisis. The study was centred on interrogation of the role played by the media in the communal crisis that engulfed the Ogbakiri community of Rivers State. It aimed at assessing the extent the media played the role of social responsibility during the crisis. The study adopted descriptive and qualitative research methodologies. The study anchored on three theories namely: social responsibility theory, structural functional theory and third party intervention theory. Findings of the study among others were: Excessive quest for retun on investment by television stations which negated Article 12 of the Code of Ethics of Media Practitioners in Nigeria. Again, the media practitioners were more interested in making news than mitigating the crisis. Also, lack of crisis mediation and arbitration programmes by television stations did not help in de-escalation of the crisis.  Moreso, the amount of social responsibility exhibited by the media cannot be applauded. Consequently, the study recommended among others: The media industry particularly television stations should see peace advocacy campaign, peace keeping, peace building, peace enforcement,  promotion  and rendering of humanitarian services to the vulnerable and helpless in the war-turn communities as part of their corporate social responsibility to the society rather than mere coverage of the crisis. Furthermore, the media practitioners and their employers should see crisis mediation and arbitration as a sacred service to God and humanity as this will help in skyrockeeting their social responsibility to the society. The study also recommended the pursuance of the 3-core values of professionalism, productivity and profit generation by the media industry especially television stations with concomitant social responsibility. Similarly, media industry especially television stations should promote the use of Alternative to Dispute Resolution (ADR) and ROPPIE paradigms in managing and resolution of  communal crisis in Rivers State in order to scale up their social responsibility obligation to the society. 10 Title: DEFENDING IAN HACKING’S ENTITY REALISM AGAINST THE ONSLAUGHT OF WILLIAM J. MCKINNEY.pdf
Author: CHRISTIAN C. EMEDOLU, PhD.
Abstract: Ian Hacking presents very extensive discussions of his experimental realism in Representing and Intervening (1983). Ever since that time critics have hounded his view, offering one damaging remark or another. Most of these damaging remarks have been responded to by Hacking and his allies. In this paper I take it as a task to revisit and react to the criticism leveled against Hacking by William J. McKinney. Here, I argue that Mckinney’s presentation of anomalous water experiment does not prove what he thinks it proves. It does not in any way undermine or bring novelty to the distinction between “experimenting with” and “experimenting on”. McKinney’s argument that it was later realized by the scientific community that the anomalous water produced was not as a result of polymerization – i.e., that is not “polywater” – does not rob whatever was produced its “entityness”. The putative entity has its characteristics and independent existence. The only thing it lacks is utilitarian value which can be socially, if not ontologically given. Therefore, Mckinney’s argument proves nothing against Hacking’s well-fortified experimental realism discourse. Keywords: Hacking, McKinney, Experimental Realism, Polywater, Anomalous water.  View
11 Title: MINORITY RIGHTS THE ROHINGYA ORDEAL AND THE BALFOUR OPTION FINDING HOMELAND FOR THE “MOST FRIENDLESS PEOPLE ON EARTH”..pdf
Author: IGONOH, JOSHUA A., PhD.
Abstract: The issue of minority protection has been a sticky one, both before and after the birth of the United Nations. Regarded as internal affairs of each sovereign state, steps taken by the International Community as a Post-Second World War measure was as inconsequential as in the era of the League of Nations which have been variously described as “Lame-duck”, insincere and insufficient, especially having regards to the volatility of the issue in some member-states of the United Nations. Using ordeal of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar as a case study therefore, the paper approached this subject from the perspective of an urgent need for solution, stressing that  International Community must awake from the era of lip-service and fault-finding to unearth the sticky historical undercurrent issues bedeviling effort at  finding a permanent homeland for the Rohingyas, even if it means history repeating itself as in the Balfour declaration of 1948 towards the creation of the state of Israel. 12 Title: SOCIAL SOLIDARITY IN TRADITIONAL FUNERAL RITES OF CONTEMPORARY ORUK ANAM LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF AKWA IBOM STATE.pdf
Author: Akpan, Monday Johnson & Prof. W.O. Wotogbe - Weneka, PhD.
Abstract: This study focuses on the community solidarity behind the traditional funeral rites of Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. It has been observed that whenever death occurs in the community, whether of a young or old, male or female person, but more especially the aged, it paralyses the religious, social, economic and even cultural activities of the community of our research. The research examines the various types of deaths and their traditional funeral rites, the rituals used in various burial processes of the traditional Oruk Anam, especially the massive involvement of the entire community which actually captured the attention of the researcher. The study utilizes a number of methodologies, both oral and written materials on related topics to this study. The research uses Emile Durkheim functionalism theory to examine how funerals create social solidarity and collective effervescence, as well as Durkheimian and Arnold Van Gennep’s sociological theories to show-case the unique ways in which community solidarity in traditional funeral rites empower the Oruk Anam people to conceptualize and perceive burial and its funeral rites in African societies. The study finds out that death and funeral rites are not individual affairs, but the entire community affairs, hence elaborate funeral rites involve entire community because a member of their community has passed on to the ancestral world. Just as an individual when alive belonged to the same community, when dead the individual is not abandoned by the community. It also finds out that modernity has affected much of the traditional funeral rites of Oruk Anam, but the essential parts of their rituals are still zealously observed by the people. The study therefore contributes to knowledge by bringing to limelight all the traditional funeral rites of Oruk Anam people and their social significance before modernity crept into the system,  hence the study recommends that proper documentation such as this study be made available to the present Oruk Anam people, especially the younger generation and the traditional rulers as well as the custodians of Oruk Anam culture so that the authentic Oruk Anam traditional funeral rites and their social importance will be maintained for posterity. Author: Prof. Ada Okau & Thomas Imoudu Gomment, PhD.
Abstract: Internal displacement of people has become a global social problem that requires urgent attention in order to prevent or reduce further escalation of the menace. The study examines the challenges of post-crisis resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons in Abuja and Edo State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study examines causes of displacement of people, problems of the internally displaced persons, effect of internally displaced persons on the society, and the rehabilitation and reintegration of the internally displaced persons back to the society. The study used qualitative method of data collection and analysis. Specifically, In-depth Interview (IDI) and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were used to generate data from the respondents which were content analyzed. The study found that displacement of people is as a result of violent conflict occasioned by the activities of Boko Haram, heders/farmers clashes, flood, famine, draught and other natural disasters. It was also found that displaced persons face the problems of starvation, diseases as well as psychological problems. Another finding of the study is that incompatibility, lack of social cohesion, and unproductiveness on the part of the displaced person are the effects of displacement on the society. Finally, the study found that restoration of peace to the conflict-infested areas before the idea of rehabilitation and reintegration can come in through empowerment programme such as: skill acquisition, apprenticeship scheme, vocational training and other forms of technical education. The study recommended the need to engage warring parties in dialogue in order to find lasting solutions to the problem of violent conflict in Nigeria. Another recommendation is for government to look for a way of solving the varying problems of displaced persons in camps. On the issue of incompatibility and lack of social cohesion, the message of unity in diversity can go a long way in proffering solution to the problem. Finally, empowerment programme can ease the process of rehabilitation and reintegration of the IDPs to the society Key Words: Internal Displacement, Post-crisis, Rehabilitation, Skill Acquisition, Violence.  View
14 Title: FEDERALISM AND RESOURCE CONTROL A PANECEA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA.pdf
Author: MACALEX-ACHINULO, E.C., PhD.
Abstract: The Research is on federalism and resource control: A panacea for sustainable development in Nigeria. This study therefore is set out to examine the relationship between resource control and sustainable development in a federal state. The main essence is to bring to far the interconnected and interrelatedness of the two variables and how achievement of peaceful coexistence, political stability and sustainable development will be made easy in Nigeria. The theoretical framework adopted is the game theory and data collection was sourced from the secondary sources. Findings were made, revealing that in a true federal practiced system of government, component states are meant to harness their own resources and pay a certain percentage to the central government, which was the practice in Nigeria during the regional government era that was truncated by the military. Moreover, findings equally revealed that Nigerias oil economy has resulted to a high rate of unemployment in the country because almost all the citizens are based on petro Naira. The diversification is not eminent enough to employ a good percentage of the jobless youth. Also, that resource control conflictual agitations have destroyed Nigerias economic pace of development and caused instability in the polity which have, in the end, resulted to unsustainable development in the entire Nigerian state. This research paper therefore proffer that true federalism should be practiced by Nigerian government, state should have the constitutional right to manage and control their endowed resources and pay a stipulated percentage to the federal purse, federal government should from time to time intervene to render aids and technical assistance to any state that is in dare need, etc. these will help to maintain peaceful coexistence and accelerate the achievement of sustainable development in Nigeria. 16 Title: LEADERSHIP AND CRISES OF STEEL DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA WITHER AJAOKUTA STEEL COMPANY.pdf
Author: DANGA, JAMIU YUSUF
Abstract: In analyzing the challenge of industrial development in Nigeria, scholars have argued that colonialism and neocolonialism are responsible for Nigeria’s lack of industrial development. However, the inimical role national leadership has played in the industrial development of Nigeria has not been sufficiently analyzed. Using descriptive method in our analysis, we argued that since 1960, Nigerian leadership has offered contradictory policies that have led to unsustainable industrial development using Ajaokuta Steel Company as a case study. We suggest that there should be a stable industrial policy that is driven by national interest to develop the Ajaokuta steel company in order to reposition the industrial base for national development.
