1 Title: THE FAMILY COUNSELLING AND VIOLENCE.pdf
Author: Obua Anthony Okachuku PhD.
Abstract: This paper deals with the family, counseling and violence. It first defines the three terms: the family as “a composition of father, mother and the child or children”. By extension, the family includes other extended relations like uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, nieces etc. Counseling is defined as “advice which an expert gives to someone as guide to solving a particular problem or reaching a goal”. While violence is “behavior which is intended to hurt, injure kill people or damage properties”. In all the family is regarded by many sociologists as the cornerstone of society, the basic unit of social organizational and it is hard to imagine how mankind could function without it. Every human being is born into a family from where development and maturation takes place through the efforts of father and mother and other adult members of the extended family, especially in a typically African home setting. The development and maturation of the child, particularly in character and behavior is principally a function of counseling. And the parents who are the first teachers of the child assume the role of counselors –counseling the child, especially teenager on norms and values of society. A youth who imbibes “value orientation” would view his years as a time of steady growth, free from personal confusion and the demands of others, for instance to engage in violence and organized crimes.      View

3 Title: SOCIETAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL CONFLICT THE WAY FORWARD.pdf
Author: Ekundayo Job Ayodele
Abstract: Conflict is an inevitable aspect of human interactions, this phenomenon which is inherent in every socio-cultural, economic and political settings is characteristic of group interactions. However, depending on how it is handled, it could either be constructive, or could be destructive. From the time of independence, Nigeria has had to contend with various forms of intra-communal and inter-communal conflicts, ranging from religious, ethnic, political conflicts to trade union, labour struggles and other forms of industrial and economic conflicts. Societies all over the world apparently experience relations of some type at various times. This is due to the fact that social relations whether formal, semi-formal or informal, contain elements of the basic two forms of social interaction; (i) cooperation and competition (ii) certain forms of competitive relations that bring about conflicts. The way and manner by which conflicts are resolved, whether or not they are resolved depends a great deal on the strength of the social structures, institutions, customs and practices of a society. 4 Title: IDENTITY AND THE CONFLICT OF RESOURCE CONTROL IN AHMED YERIMA’S HARD GROUND.pdf
Author: Julie Umukoro, Ebere Innocent Uwah & Caesar Nicholas
Abstract: This paper looks at the issues of resource identity and resource control struggle in the Niger Delta as reflected in the play Hard Ground by Ahmed Yerima. The paper deepens its look at how inequalities and deprivations have found its way into educational controversies and resource control struggles. The given circumstances of the characters, their knowledge of their situations, their goals, expectations, values and the means of achieving what they want are spelt out, that is why Nimi who is the pivotal agent of the action of the play leaves school and enroll as a child-soldier, sacrificing to save their future which he sees as a constricting horizon and a blind alleys. This paper emphasizes the relationship among the physical environment of the characters, their mind and brain; where whatever pains the characters feel in their environment affect their psychological make-up which is immediately reflected by a corresponding neurological state in the brain that in turn conditions the way they structure their actions.  It has been clearly pictured that armed militia and oil installation equipment canalization in the Niger Delta are responses to inequalities and deprivations which the Niger Delta people are subjected to. 5 Title: PARADIGM SHIFT IN GOVERNMENT PUBLIC RELATIONS PROGRAMMES A VIABLE ANTIDOTE TO ATTITUDINAL AND BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE IN NIGERIA.pdf
Author: Alikor, Windy S., Ukaegbu, Micheal Ibe PhD. & Abubakri. Oluniyan Raman
Abstract: This paper focuses on Paradigm Shift in Government Public Relations Programmes: Viable Antidote to Attitudinal and Behavioral Change in Nigeria. The rationale behind this paper is predicated on the endemic failure of most government programmes, meant to create mutual understanding and goodwill between the citizenry and the government at all levels in Nigeria. Some of the government public relations programmes that have triggered off aspersions by the public are SURE-P, Zero Pot- Hole in Port Harcourt, Fight Against Maternal and Infant Mortality (MDGs 4 and 5), Massive Road Constructions in Port Harcourt, National Technical and Vocational Education Programme in Secondary Schools. Turn around maintenance of Nigerian refineries, etc. Consequently, the paper notes that the growing culture of impunity in planning and execution of public programme by the government agents and contractors is a major bane of public programme both at national and state levels. The paper also observed that the absence of integrity plan and integrity court in the nation for the quick trial of culprits without compromise is another reason why most government PR programmes suffer comatose. More so, the paper found that the absence of “carrot and stick” model in the management of government programmes is another hiccups to the success of the programmes. Consequently the following antidotes are recommended in order to addressing the multidimensional problems. Some of which are: introduction of integrity plan, establishment of integrity court, effective monitory and evaluation of government PR programmes and the adoption of carrot and stick model in execution of public major PR programmes or projects. Keywords: paradigm Shift, Government Public Relations, Antidote. View

7 Title: ARISTOTLE ON HUMAN NATURE AS POLITICAL ONTOLOGY AND CONSTRUCTIVISM.pdf
Author: Maraizu Elechi, PhD.
Abstract: This paper is an analysis of Aristotle’s naturalistic conception of politics, in which he sees politics as natural and human nature as political. For Aristotle, man is a political animal whose nature entails that his proper existence can only be realized in the polis where he can co-exist harmoniously with his fellows. According to him, proper employment of the natural credentials of rationality and speech disposes man for a meaningful life in the polis through debate, arguments and enlightened discourse as means of resolving possible conflicts or differences. For Aristotle, politics is natural and human nature is political in the sense that political life is rooted in human nature and human nature conversely requires political life for its fulfillment - the promotion of the wellbeing or good life and happiness of man and the development of society. Ironically, certain political actions contravene the very aim and natural end of politics. Selfish designs rather than the advancement of human common good and happiness appear to be the defining lineament or essence of politics in our time. It is our conviction therefore that proper understanding of Aristotle’s relationship between nature and politics will enable man to properly understand and appreciate his true nature and reason for being in political society. This paper calls attention to the natural end of politics which seems to be jettisoned by many political actors and leaders in many climes. View

Author: Osirim Monday, Wadike C. George & Abuba Solomon
Abstract: The study investigates external debt management and economic growth of Nigeria using data from the period of 1981 - 2014.The multiple regression and ordinary least squares (OLS) techniques were used to analyze the secondary data sourced from the National Bureau of Statistics, Central Banks of Nigeria and the Debt Management Office. The results of the findings revealed that external debt stock has positive impact on gross domestic product (GDP) and Per Capital Income (PCI), while external debt service payment has a negative impact on GDP and PCI. This implies that effective and efficient management of external debt will promote economic growth and development of Nigeria. The study recommends that government should only procure and utilize external loans for economic reasons rather than for political and other frivolities. Besides, debt service burden should be kept within sustainable level; that means that the   government should determine the level or amount of debt the economy can sustain and the conditions of borrowing should be    on favorable terms. 16 Title: CONCEPTUAL IMPERATIVES FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE AND POLITICAL STABILITY IN NIGERIA PART 1.pdf
Author: Ekiyor K. Welson, PhD.
Abstract: This paper examines the conceptual and theoretical significance and impact of the extrapolation of theories and principles generally in the understanding of the social structure of a society in the quest for social justice and political stability. This is in contradistinction to Saro-Wiwa’s (1994) and Nnoli’s (1994) analysis of banal, whimsical, emotive and unscientific patterns and approaches adopted by the Nigerian state since independence. The essay will progress in the manner of first taking an over-view of what a theory is and its necessity and relevance in the search for social-political solutions in society. This is accentuated by the observation by thinkers such as Awolowo (1968) that many African leaders in organizing their states ignore the role of theories and social science unlike developed democracies such as Europe and America that pattern their societies in line with social and political theories, models and principles. The notion of theory and its practical usage in society is examined in consonance with arguments on the relationship between theory and practice. The idea of an ideal theory and a non-ideal theory is examined also in relation and reaction to the parameters set by Rawls for his theory. Rawls (1971) wrote that his theory of justice is intended only for a ‘well-ordered society’ but with possibilities of non-compliance in less ordered social conditions. Rawls believed that perfect conditions are quite possible for the application of his two principles of justice while at the same time he thought that lesser conditions of social order are also possible. It is therefore confusing that he threw up the debate, especially with the belief that he postulated his ideas though as a non-historical and hypothetical contraption but actually in reaction to the social problems of the American society in the 1950s (Audard 2007)  View

Author: Ibe Henry Chilatu & N.B Poronakie, PhD.
Abstract: The effect of family economic background in the upbringing of an African child cannot be overemphasized. It permeates all the stratum of the worldview either positively or negatively.  This article therefore, focuses on influence of family economic background on street children phenomenon in Ibadan north local government, Oyo state. Two hypotheses were formulated to explore the crucial variables, inherent in this study. Employing the descriptive survey method, a 40 – item questionnaire was used to elicit data for the study which was complemented by the 1995 UNICEF report on street – children and youths in Lagos State. The instrument was complemented with an 8-item oral interview, adopting the anthropocentric research method the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) approach. The data was collected and analysed and presented using frequency counts, simple percentage (%), chi-square (x2) and the co-efficient of correlation – Spearman’s rule (Rank-Order) correlation. In conclusion, the findings indicate that family economic background of the children significantly influences the street children syndrome in Ibadan metropolis, and as such, it was recommended that ultimate responsibility for the wellbeing of citizens, especially young and immature ones, rests with Government; so the Federal Government is called upon to evolve a policy on street children. 20 Title: RESOLVING THE INCREASING TREND OF AGITATIONS IN NIGER DELTA REGION OF NIGERIA THROUGH QUALITY EDUCATION.pdf
Author: Prof. Samuel Amaele & Assoc. Prof. Godpower A.I. Nwogu
Abstract: The Nigerian nation, made up of various ethnic and cultural units is also a multi-religions nation. These units, it should be noted, have long existed before the advent of the colonial administration which amalgamated the Northern and Southern protectorates in 1914. Even at that, there were still minority ethnic groups outside the three dominant regions of North, East and West, each agitating for recognition as an entity. This paper focuses on the Niger Delta Region. Attempts are made to ask questions such as: who are they? What are their challenges? Are   there attempts by government(s) and oil companies to address their grievances?  How could   functional education be applied to resolving their increasing trend of agitations? This stems from the fact that we need a literate nation where every citizen can key into unhindered access to quality education which plays a vital role in nation building. The paper would proffer solutions, which it is hoped, would assuage the drums of war between the Federal Government/the Multi-national Oil Companies; and the Oil producing communities of the Niger Delta Region. 21 Title: THE RELEVANCE OF SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS IN THE INVESTMENT DECISIONS OF PORT HARCOURT INVESTMENT HOUSES AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION.pdf
Author: Ndu, Eugene C. & Anyanwu, Success A. C., PhD.
Abstract: This paper investigated the relevance of sensitivity analysis (SA) in investment decisions (IDs). Its purpose was to identify the relevance (if any) of SA in IDs. Two research questions guided the study: “Is SA relevant in IDs”? And “What is the relevance of SA in IDs”? The study sample comprised twenty-six managers of thirteen investment houses in Port Harcourt; drawn through the judgmental sampling technique. The study adopted mean and standard deviation techniques to answer the research questions. The result showed that SA is relevant in IDs. The relevance stems from the fact that among other things, it helps the ID maker know the influence that variations in a specific parameter will have on proposed IDs; as well as help the ID maker to ascertain which parameters are the significant drivers of the ID model’s results. Based on these, it was concluded that SA is very important in IDs; and should be utilized to improve on the quality of IDs. It was recommended among other things that ID makers should always develop SA models to further analyses their IDs; and the outcome of such modeling should be used to make informed decisions.
